The mountains leap from the sea around every bend of the fjord; the porpoise and king eagle guide your way as you journey by sea kayak through the branches of the Sognefjord.Still open in 2008: 4-Days Fjordland: 12-15 Aug , 25-28 Aug 5-Days Fjordland: 2-6 Aug (full), 18-22 August Other departures upon request.
Begin your trip with expert paddling instruction from your guide before embarking down the Lusterfjord. The first day on the water you will get acquainted with the fjord and your sea kayak while paddling past fjord-side farms and villages- as well as Norway’s oldest Stave Church! You will leave society behind and camp the first night in a remote portion of the Lusterfjord with no roads, villages or houses: only the deep fjords and high mountains will surround you. Day two will take you out on the big fjord where you’ll learn from the grandeur of the waters why Norwegians are a seafaring people. Night two will find you camped beneath 1700 meter peaks listening to the waves and sharing tales of the sea. Day three will take you to the southern side of the fjord past the village of Frønningen and into the Aurlandsfjord where a new waterfall is around every bend. Night three’s campsite is a front row seat to the greatest midsummer sunsets the north has to offer. Day four will take you into the Nærøyfjord, the smallest and best known branch of all the Sognefjord. The shoreline makes a dramatic turn toward vertical as the mountains tower above you. Night four you will bed down near a tiny, isolated fjord village where you can savor the dramatic landscape. On the last day you will paddle the final leg of the journey and arrive in Gudvangen, an old Viking stronghold at the tip of the Nærøyfjord (arrival at Gudvangen usually about 13.00 - 14.00pm). From there you may return on the ferry with your guide, or continue your travels of Norway by bus or train. FAQ 4 Day Fjordland or 5 Day Fjordland - what should I choose? Whatever you will choose to do, both trips are a unique experience: Both follow the last of the still road-less stretches of the Sognefjord. Both will leave you with the lasting memory of having paddled the Sognefjord of Norway, its majestic main arm and the narrowest and most dramatic side branch - the Nærøyfjord. 4 Day Fjordland covers less kilometres per day and in total, thus leaving more time for side trips or simply time to relax. It may be the better choice for paddling beginners or novices. On the 5 Day Fjordland you come to see the Urnes Stave Church UNESCO World Heritage site and you will paddle the turquoise waters of the Lusterfjord that was often named the most romantic and wild of all the side branches of the Sognefjord - undisturbed and only very little frequented by other boat traffic. For this trip you should have some paddling mileage or come well prepared and trained or with a strong buddy who will enjoy sharing a double with you. You will cover roughly 100km of Europe's largest and most majestic fjord. 5 Day Fjordland is the ultimate choice if you want to get the complete picture of the Fjords of Norway.
Where and when should I meet? 5-Day Fjordland starts from our sea kayaking station in Solvorn (on special request also from Kroken). We usually meet at 11.00am. 4-Day Fjordland starts from Kaupanger (10km from Sogndal, 10km from the airport). We usually meet down by the bay at the Fjord Museum close to the ferry terminal at 11.00am.
Where and when do we arrive? How can I travel on afterwards? We aim for an arrival at about 13.00 in Gudvangen, an old Viking stronghold at the tip of the Nærøyfjord. From there you may return on the ferry with your guide (16.30 arrival at Kaupanger). If you continue your travels of Norway, from the beach of Gudvangen to the bus stop it is only a 100mtr walk. Buses leave here direction Flåm or Voss. (The 14.00 bus lets you arrive in time for connections with the Flåm Railway or ferries departing from Flåm to Bergen.)
